Crafting with the Lovely Ladies...

Stuff 2388 (Small)

Really.  Is there anything better than sorting through a pile of buttons...finding the perfect ones?  And with friends at that!

Stuff 2396 (Small)

Back in the Fall (I'll be catching up blog posts for the rest of my life) I did a program at the local ladies club.  Woo, did we have some fun whippin' up these bookmarks!  I'm certain most of you have the ingredients to make these in your crafty cupboard---ribbons, buttons, and hot glue.  I also had silk leaves, felt flowers and such for layering.  You can click the pic to enlarge it for details.

Stuff 2384 (Small)

The green trays had everything needed to make the bookmarks---great because you can prep them with materials before hand and then put them out on demand.  I learned that from my supervising teacher when I did my student teaching.

Stuff 2393 (Small)

I also showed how to attach beaded dangles using the ribbon end findings.  The bookmark on the left is my friend Susan's---love how she had beaded dangles and buttons.

Stuff 2386 (Small)

You can make 3 or 4 in about 10 minutes (or close to).  This is another dandy Mother's day gift especially to go in a special book.

Beaded Beads...

Stuff 2077 (Small)

You know I love these things...I really do.  30 little beads woven into one big bead!  There's a dandy tutorial over on my old podcast blog (stay tuned for details on that because there's some exciting talk going on about it) so you can make your own.  As for the handmade ear wires from which these gems hang, my new book, Metalsmithing 101 for Beaders (to be released this fall), will show you how.  You can use Swarovski crystals, E beads, seed beads--experimenting is fun once you get the hang of how to weave the beads.

For Easter this year, one of my Aunts made these neat little nest branches.  The nests were real, but vacated and then she tucked moss and pretty little eggs in them.  They were all different and amazing to look at.

Speaking of collecting and nesting, this is what's been going down in the Bead Blogger nests this past week...

Button, Button!

Who has the button bracelet!?!?

Button 001 (Small)

Me and Katie Hacker do!

A few weeks ago, Katie gave me a blank bracelet with gluing pads to make a button bracelet.  This is a project from her super book, Hip to Bead.  Which, by the way, is chalked full of versatile, cool beading projects.  The bracelet form is from Rings and Things and boy do I love it!  The wide links make using large buttons easy!  Simply glue the buttons to the pads on the bracelet and  Hello Mother's Day gift! lol  Especially, if you use sentimental buttons from a family button box.  I like to use Dazzle Tac adhesive for pieces like this.  Fun, Fast, Fabulous-my kinda project!!  Be sure to check out Katie's version too!

Button 004 (Small)

P.S.  If you like those fabric covered buttons (which I snagged in the scrapbooking section of the craft store and cut off the metal tabs), I think you'll find mega inspiration in Carmi's post here...and here.

Happy Easter...

Illustrations 909 (Small)

What. A. Lovely. Day.

P.S. Birds, leaves and buttons hot glued or perched as it were on top of plastic eggs.  So fun to hide!  These were filled with those easy peesy glass droplet magnets with images Mod Podged underneath---You know the ones.

Easter Eggs...

Illustrations 869 (Small)

I like to have a pumpkin on the table for Halloween, hearts on Valentine's and some eggs at Easter.  It's all in an attempt to keep it simple, but festive around here.  These have been sitting next to a vase of daffodils the past week and boy have I enjoyed them.  They came to be when my friend Dave asked, "why am I never on the blog."  (Dave's one of my best friends from high school that was in town for a couple of days)  My response was easy and direct, "ya gotta craft if you want to be on the blog!"

Illustrations 862 (Small)

I had a bowl of paper mache' eggs that needed doing something with and I just got a box of the new Folk Art colors by Plaid.  Dave base coated, I polka-dotted, and sealed them with some Extreme Glitter also by Plaid.

Somewhere in the middle Dave said, "Jeez Candie, you make Martha seem like a Saint." Hilarious.  Me?!?

**The eggs took approximately 1 1/2 hours to make by air-drying, but you could speed things up with a hair dryer.

Beading With Children...

Illustrations 239 (Small)

is so easy and when children create, the result always seems magical and perfect.  Throw some beads in a bowl, prep wire or elastic with a clasp or taping the end and away they go.  NO RULES and voila!

This is my girl C's bracelet.  She hunted and pecked through the bead bowls like a pro.  Love the sweetness of this piece from color to charm choices!

When is the last time....

  Illustrations 438 (Small)

You got together with friends and made stuff?  Be it cards, granny squares, food, etc...  Last night I went to a gathering where we each brought a healthy dish and the recipe to share.  It was SO fun.  Good food and a bunch of old souls.  I met a lot of new ladies I look forward to seeing again too.  These are some pictures from when a few of us got together to make some Valentines.  It only took 30 seconds for the table to become a jolly and festive mess....

A simple pleasure...

Illustrations 792 (Small)

I could have a 30 foot long work table and still only have 10 square inches in which to work at.  I've been making some necklaces lately for custom orders and such.

But, when I'm not pushing the beads and metal around...

Illustrations 817 (Medium)

One of the things I do is take time to play...  After turning my hobby into my job, I found it important to find new and fun things that make my heart flutter and are inspiring.  My family is very musical and I grew up loving music.  Still not sure why I put my violin down for 10 years, but it's better to pick it up late, than never.  This is my friend Mike.  We played in a garage band together back in high school...called The Worms.  I always forget where that name came from.  Last night we played for four hours and it was a blast.

Anne Huskey-Lockard...

IMG_0019 (Medium)

This is my new friend, Anne Huskey-Lockard.  She's a gal I've heard a lot about through the arty grapevine, but hadn't gotten to meet.  Finally!  We met and chatted over 3 cups of coffee and I think she summed it up best here.  "A kindred spirit" indeed, there is acosmic connection amongst artists (ok, the internet helps too) that we can find each other through the miles of corn fields that separate us.  And it's comforting to meet people that understand this strange existence of being an artist.  Anne recently injured herself, so if you could stop for a second and send her some healing thoughts, it would be most appreciated.  As it turns we have a few friends in common, so I look forward to summer and chats about new ideas and visits to her studio.

Collage_pair_back

These are some of Anne's box canvases rich in layers of paint and collage.  Unbelievable when you look at all that's going on in her work.  She makes art that you can really get lost in....  Click the picture to enlarge it.

Anne is also the coordinator of the Peru Arts Co-op that meets at the cute, Cafe Du Cirque.  I love a coffee shop with a green front door!  It's a great place with lots of charm and smiles.

A Fiber of a Festival...

Saturday I went to a fiber festival in Portland, Indiana.  It was a blast!  If you're into fiber arts of any sort, or want to learn a new craft, this is for you... Felting, spinning, weaving, rug hooking, beading, and more!

Illustrations 744 (Medium)

Vendors and visitors bring their crafts for a few days of visiting, selling, buying, and creating.  I went to see old friends, buy some wool for new felting project proposals and to find places to teach workshops.

Illustrations 745

Save your pennies because there are a million cool things to spend them on.  The thing I love about fiber fests is learning something new.  This time it was "rug hooking".  I ended up buying a very cool kit from Jan Ryan with a burlap base and lots of things to hook, like strips from recycled wool suits and hand dyed yarn.  Of course I have dreams of making a ginormous rug, but I'll be content if I can make my sampler....you know how it goes.

Illustrations 756 (Small)

And here's a budding polymer clay button and bead artist.  A girl after my own heart, I loved her set up.  She is my felting teacher's daughter.  I'm amazed at how tall she's gotten after not seeing her for a few years!

Matt and jamie (Medium)

So happy to see my other felting teachers, Matt and Jamie.  Giggles all around, I didn't tell them I was coming so it was a fun surprise.  You can have all your fleeces (sheep shearings) processed at their fiber mill, The Wooly Knob.  P.S. Matt (on right) wove the garment he's wearing. A-Mazing!

Illustrations 749 (Medium)

The stars of the show, sheep shearing demos were going on outside.  Now, you've the itch to go to a fiber festival or seven so here are some links to help locate one in your area...

And if you're local to Indiana, Matt and Jamie have some listed here.

An impossible question with an obvious answer...

Illustrations 712 (Small)

I have my alarm set so the radio comes on in the morning instead of beep-beep-beep-beep-beep-beep...it's no fun to wake up to an unsettling "alarm" is it?  Why do we do that to ourselves?  Anyway, I lay there and listen to it for a bit while I come out of sleep and remind myself what I'm doing for the day.  One of the contests is called the "impossible question"--I think you win a free lunch at Pizza Hut's lunch buffet if you get the correct answer (in case you were wondering).  So one of last week's IQ was:

42% of people are happier if they have _________ within a mile of their house.

The Answer: A Best Friend

I loved it.  I believe it too!  Because you are more likely to see them, share some stories, some burdens, more importantly-Laughs, right?

The same day I heard that question I decided to invite my best friend here in town over for lunch on a whim.  Turns out, she was having a crummy day because her car was kaput...like unrepairable kaput so it was good timing for comfort food.  As you can see it was a modest lunch, but we had a nice visit, commiserating about her car, eating, talking budgets, and giggling in the middle---all that in a 45 minute lunch break.  And what a difference it makes in your life!

Green Tea Muffins Recipe...

Remember those green tea muffins I made awhile back?  The recipe is from the Collection of Words blog that I can't seem to find a link to anymore.  This is a great recipe, fast to make, beautiful in color, not too sweet, good with your favorite hot beverage....I could go on, but here's the recipe instead so you can see for yourself.

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
one stick butter (1/4 cup)
one egg
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk (plus 1/4 cup extra if needed)
2 teaspoons powdered green tea
1 teaspoon vanilla

Set oven to 350.  Melt the stick of butter in a bowl, add the sugar and blend together (or cream).  Add the vanilla and egg and stir.  Sift together tea, flour, and baking soda.  Add the dry to the wet mixture and add the milk.  Stir.  Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Links-a-daisies...

Illustrations 728 (Small)

When I went to Kathmandu, I scoured the place for anything felt-and boy did I find it!  Whole stores of felty goodness-I was in heaven.  This is a peppy little brooch I picked up.  I loved it for the random color combo, the stitchery around the edges and this:

We Heart Mod Podge...and Extreme Glitter Paint!

N542077428_1996355_4683

Me and the Plaid gang on Day 3 at the big Craft and Hobby showdown in Cali.  That's Cathie and Steve from DIY's Creative Juice television show and the lovely Donna Dewberry-genius behind the One Stroke painting technique.  Side Note:  The night before Cathie cut up my Mod-Podge T.  She's a master T-shirt slasher....I'm not kidding-it was magic what she did.  And now, I cannot look at a T without thinking about how to alter it.  Thanks Cath ;-)

Illustrations 709 (Small)

This is a sweet magnet Cathie and Steve made me.  Check out the new Extreme Glitter Paint by Plaid.  This stuff is so SPARKLIN' HOT!  I think you'll love it.  You can paint it over plain or base coated surfaces--the more coats, the more sparkle.  And then Mod Podge your cut shapes and flat back crystals for added embellishment.  Wood flower shapes would be great for spring...and I am soooo ready for Spring!

Bracelet Making Class...

This week is one big blur...

Tuesday night I gave a lecture about myself and work at the Honeywell House, Wednesday night was Sit and Stitch and then onto violin practice with a group I've not played with before, Thursday night I taught a simple stringing class (read on for more), Friday night my parents and I ventured on down to Anderson, Indiana to Hoosier Park for an all-you-can-eat-buffet (crab legs, shrimp, CHOCOLATE FONDUE FOUNTAIN!), Saturday I volunteered at the business expo here in town, and then this morning I played my violin with a neat group at a local church...it's also amazing how much work I got done with all this in the evenings.  It was a great week and the best part was seeing even more people that I haven't bumped into since I've been home.

The bracelet class on Thursday night was a blast-18 people signed up and each bracelet looked smashing.  I'm not just saying that either--people were very chill, just stringing some beads and enjoying the company of their friends or new friends.  Take a peek...

Illustrations 696 (Medium)

Have you made a bracelet with a button and seed bead loop closure?  I love them.  Great way to treasure that vintage button you've been hanging on to.  I know you've got one tucked away in your favorite button box.

Illustrations 686 (Small)

Lots of bead hunting, thinking, and it was neat because friends came together and helped each other out with major design decisions...

Illustrations 698 (Small)

Here's a few of the bracelets from the night.  Many had them on at the business expo yesterday and that made me smile...big.  Thanks girls.

Illustrations 692 copy (Small)

I tucked about 8 of Plaid's new FRESH resin charms in the charm bowl.  It's no surprise there were none left at the end of class because they are so cool.  Heather layered silver charms on top which looks awesome.  You can buy Fresh charms at Michaels and I believe other craft stores are selling them now so it's worth a peek.  We also used Beadalon's 49 strand, .018 diameter beading wire.  It's my favorite all time wire.

Illustrations 687 (Small)

And new friendships were made....love that part too.  For me, I'm always a little nervous about taking a class by myself, but inevitably I come home with 3 new friends.  You know what they say--you can never have enough crafty friends (ok I inserted the "crafty" part).

I have so many favorite parts about teaching...the smile (and sometimes amazement) on their face once they've finished their bracelet and seeing people's spirit come out in their creation---soft and bold, calm to playful.  It's wonderful.

Soupa Doop, Soupa doop...

Remember that song by Salt-N-Peppa?  It just came to me when I thought about the word, "soup."  "Shoop"! Oh, I have to go You-Tube it now...it's stuck in my head.--------------------Ok, I'm back.  I was going to insert the link, but  the lyrics are kinda naughty, lol.  I can't remember the last time I heard that song. 8th grade maybe?  It's funny how "adult" ears interpret the lyrics now---I think as a kid we just like the melody and the beat.  No wonder when our parent's were leery, we said, "what's the big deal?!?"

Anyway.  Soup.  If you are in a soup rut, and you've an adventurous palette try this:

Illustrations 045 (Small)

Spicy Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup.  Mmmmmm, full of flavor awesomeness.  I froze some of it and it thawed just dandy.  Throw some fresh cilantro on it and you're good to go.

Flower bracelet (Medium)

I've been Spring cleaning as of late...closets, computer files, pictures, drawers, you name it!  But, itseems to be going soooo slow! Doesn't it always look really really bad before it gets better?  This bracelet is one of the pictures I found.  I made it for my mom a couple of years ago and I really love it because it doesn't have a pattern.  It's composed of some favorite beads I've picked up on my travels and some woven beads.  While cleaning, I've come across some bits and bobs, beads and charms (you can imagine), and so I started a big "bead soup" bowl of inspiring beads that I hope to make something for myself with someday....as a reward for all this parting and sorting.

Making Earrings With My Editor...

First off, your words of kindness about my last post moved me to tears and warmed my heart.  Thank you for the comments and emails you guys.  It is your support that gives me courage and strength to keep on truckin' on my creative road of life---who wants "shot-gun"?!?! (I know, my corny sense of humor is still in tact).

IMGP2518 (Small)

One of the positives of not blogging for awhile is that I have tons to share with you.  I always knew I would pick it up again so I kept documenting with lots of pictures.  Let's back track a bit to when I told you about my photo shoot for my new book.  It's the eve of day four of the photo shoot...we are delirious at best!  But!  Being the die-hards that we are, Linda Kopp, my editor, and I start making earrings at 5:30.  She's a PMC junkie and I a mad-metalsmith so together we fabricated a couple pairs of earrings down in the Lark Books Offices' basement...

IMGP2519 (Small)

She lines up the parts...tweaking and sanding.

IMGP2521 (Small)

and I assemble, enlarge holes in the PMC findings and make the ear wires...now that she's edited my new book, "Metalsmithing 101 for Beaders", she should be able to do this on her own (wink wink).  This is my make-shift studio in the Lark Kitchen.  Here's what we came up with...

Illustrations 021 (Small)

Kind of like windows or how we draw sky-scrapers when we are children (or now in my case), these parts have dried PMC chips in them. AND...

Illustrations 036 (Small)

Rustic chandelier earrings--the base is PMC and so are a couple of the beads.  I balled up copper wires and hammered the ends.  Don't forget the Liver of Sulphur!

The next day we headed off to the Vanderbilt mansion.  Unbelievable!  It was decorated for Christmas...I felt like I was in a doll-house it was so enormous!  Breath-taking.

IMGP2542 (Small)

Today we spoke on the phone and I have to say, I love my editor (and everyone at Lark Books really).  But, Linda is such a joy to work with and I mean that with every ounce of my heart.  She really inspires me and I have learned so much from her.  Getting a chance to play at the end of the shoot was the cherry on top to my trip there.

I'm Alive...

DSC_0109 (Small)

From a recent bio photo shoot...one week ago today actually.

Remember that scene in Weekend at Bernie’s, where Bernie is being drug behind the ski boat?  Yeah, the past few months have sort of been like that. I’m Bernie and there was no way I was letting go of the rope.  I never know how much to tell about my personal life over here on the ol’ blog, but I feel I owe you guys an explanation of where I’ve been….  Plain and simple:  Butch and I got a divorce.  It was finalized a few days before Christmas.  Heart-breaking…even when you know it’s the right thing to do.  They say you go through a denial period when confronted with decisions like this and I’m pretty sure I did when I came back from China early.  I’m not hateful about it, we’re still friends.  I’ve spoken to many folks who’ve been “through it” and often the story is the same:  things just get away from you.  It was no different for us.  My family and friends have been so supportive—we’ve grieved the loss and embraced life together.  There are days when I really can't believe I lived so far from my family.  My mom and I teach art classes together, dad's bbq's, walks with Rocker and Grandpa.  Oh, I love being near them again.  Then there's dear Katie Hacker and beady sleep-overs at her house.  Double trouble there!  I played the violin all through high school and put it down when I went to college.  Recently, I decided to start playing with some ol’ boys from a garage band I was in back in HS.  It seemed so un-cool to play the violin in school, but now 10 years later, it’s kinda cool!  Another old friend from my youth works in a building near my apartment—so she and I catch up often.    Someone once said “friends are the best medicine” and I believe it---love my friends!  We’ve taken road trips to Michaels craft store, went sledding, made Valentines, cooked food, played music, gone to see live music, museum parties, and the list keeps growing.  Rocker still struts his stuff all over town—had to get him a parka for Indiana’s brisk winter days (which he hated-talk about “un-cool”).  The snow concerned me because he is a tropical dog, but boy, let the fella off the leash and he turns into a little white deer prancing around in the snow.  So cute.

IMG_0016 (Small)

My Compass ring, for those days when you're feeling a little bit lost ;-)

I’m teaching, working at the Craft and Hobby Association show with Plaid, finishing my new book, designing new stuff for magazines---all very exciting.

Sometimes we have to make-over our lives if something isn’t working.  It's hard.  I can think of a million analogies for it, the first one coming to mind is deep cleaning my apartment--where's the fly-lady?!?!  But, through all these alterations, I’ve learned a ton about myself (some things I wanted to know, some I didn’t, of course).  Forgive me for the disappearance, it's been a ton to digest, lots of growing pains, and I'm happy to be feeling back to my old self again.  Thanks for sticking around, thanks for the worried emails, and thanks most for the support over the years.

(compass component from Ornamentea.com---you'd be amazed how many people want one of these rings!)

Day 4 here in Asheville and things are going great with my book's photo shoot.  It's been exciting to see it coming together.  And, boy, to get to hang out in Asheville for the big project makes me feel so lucky!  Such a great town with super people.

I'm also lucky to have these two ladies working out the artsy details here...

Pumpkin Butta!

Wow!  Temperatures dropped today and at the moment there are heavy splats of rain hitting the pavement.  Ah yes, do you hear that knocking?  It's Jack Frost, I think.  And with this cold weather, warm foods are at the forefront of my mind.  Today I'm making Ultimate Potato Soup for tonight's dinner.  A few weeks ago, I ordered soup at a great little pub in Ft. Wayne where they served a smather of peanut butter and pumpkin butter with a hearty slice of bread.  I wanted more...

IMGP2471 (Small)

So I made some.  It worked well to cut the recipe in half because then you only need one small can of pumpkin.  Then again, you could be the most popular kid in town if you make the full recipe, and share some with your friends.

 IMGP2477 (Small)

The aroma from simmering those spices filled my apartment.  So nice and warm.  I had one small jar, so I sterilized it and filled it up.  The rest awaits in my fridge for the potato soup and...some toast.

Oh, why didn't I get a picture of cute Katie Hacker in her bee costume, Rocker's pirate costume and I with my cat mask on?!?!  Don'tcha hate it when you do that?  This is us with crazy Ernie, the funniest scare crow ever who hangs out on the porch.  And before I forget, that's not a real fur jacket---It's a $10 Polyprophenablah blah blah (faux) fur coat from the thrift store.  I repeat $10! It worked perfectly with this cat mask I snagged at the Halloween USA store.

Il_430xN_35057824

You may've eyed a cute little bird bead in the last post...That was made by the delightful bead artist, Heather Powers of Humble Beads.  She's got oodles of fun stuff in her Etsy shop and lots of inspiration for using the beads here.  Have fun!

For a FELT AND METAL EXPLORATION CLASS at the lovely ORNAMENTEA.  We'll felt the wool and work the metal like never before!  I'm super excited about this class and all the possiblilites of fusing felt with metal.

Stuff 2101 (Small)

No need to have a load of skills--as Cynthia of Ornamentea wrote, "adventurous beginners" jump right in.  Students will make a bracelet and pair of earrings.  Expect torches, wire work, hammering, felting, and giggling.

Squash Soup...

Stuff 2532 (Small)
Yesterday I made some butternut squash soup.  Nothin' says fall like squash...or orange food with nutmeg and a dash of cinnamon.  If you decide to give the recipe a go, it's worth reading the comments first.  Lots of ideas to suit your pallet.  It wasn't sweet enough for moi, so I took one reader's thought and liquefied an apple, and added it to the cauldron.  Perfecto.

The peace sign in the background was made by my friend Ryan.  He calls it, Reflections of Peace.  He made it with bike reflectors he's found riding through the reservoir trails.  Love me some folk art.

It was a dark and scary night...

Ok, it wasn't.  At all. It was really a dark and fun night out at my pal Katie Hacker's house.  I took a pocket full of Halloween-ish parts and pieces for some jewelry making R&R.  It all started with these goth-like resin pendants from Plaid...

Stuff 2518 (Small)

Throw into the cauldron some playful polka-dot beads, sneaky silver skeletons, some wicked star toggle clasps, creepy polyester chain, and a couple-a-tricksters...

Stuff 2442 (Small) (3)

And you have a real treat of a night and necklace...

P.S.  Thanks Craiger (Katie's husband Craig) for supplying us with a yummy dinner and good brew.
