Cinna-Love

IMGP1087

Clone of a Cinnabon is the start to this story...  I don't know if you can tell, but we're a little deprived on the dessert front over here.  No cupcake bakeries, Amish bakeries (like near our old house back home) or even Cinnabon's in the mall.  We got nothin'!  I've been hungry for a cinnabon, so when I found this, I immediately sent it over to my friend with a note:  "do you want to make these?".  2 minutes later I got a response:  "Oh, yes! Oh,yes! Oh, yes!"  We're dangerous together, I said.

IMGP1089

Kris, the neighborhood knitting teacher came over to pitch in and she ended up rolling out the dough and showing me this neat string trick.  We used thin fishing line or nylon filament.  Now, that's a good thing!

IMGP1091

Love those spirals!

IMGP1097

Cream cheese frosting on golden brown cinnamon buns.....Sinful!  The best part of a cinnabon is the middle, don'tcha think? Super gooey, soft and still very warm.  Yes, yes, we enjoyed those very much.  And did you know the Cinnabon people have a whole list of recipe ideas for how to use their buns....as if they weren't fabulous enough on their own?!?!  Hope you're all gearing up for a fun weekend!  Happy Fourth!

Layers and Links...

IMGP1072

The other night I was a little trigger happy with my camera, snapping pictures of this and that, including my stack of bracelets on my wrist from the night.  I really like wearing my jewelry in layers, pins, necklaces, and bracelets, mmm-hem, and now big rings (one on my index and one on my ring finger).  I only have single pierced ears, but lots of folks look great wearing their earrings stacked up.  If you choose this route of layering your gems, I warn you now, it takes work to assemble the combos.  Give yourself an extra 5 to make it happen in the morning!  And now for some links...

Egg Foo Yung!

IMGP1077

Is it me or does this look like a picture of fake food in the window of an asian style restaurant?  Kinda plasticy.  Oh, well, it's what's for lunch today.  We sliced, we diced, we chopped til' we dropped to make this dish.  Lemme tell you it was all worth it!  We didn't have any meat so it was vegetarian...which we are not, but the delivery boy didn't bring our groceries because it started raining.  No regrets on the meat front though---it was awesome!  Definitely, a sprinkling of green onions on top would add to the aesthetics.  Next time.  I only know Egg Foo Yung from the Chinese restaurants back home---my mom often ordered it, but I was never that excited about it.  Sweet and sour pork, now that's another story.  Funny enough, I've not seen Egg Foo Yung on the menus here so it was a good treat on this rainy gloomy day.

I hope you're all having a nice weekend!  Here's a link to the recipe.

Retail therapy...

14275036_00_b I needed a little retail therapy today---a project was going south and I needed to take a few steps back and think, so I decided to check out Urban Outfitters.  I hadn't been on their site in 2 1/2 years when I bought my brown knee high boots.;..which I still love.  While working on my projects, I've had a lot of time to think.  Wondering about the future and what life will be like when we move home to the States.  Impossible to know everything, but I do know I love funky retro digs.  So many fun things in storage await that I thrifted---probably a lot I've forgotten about!  I immediately fell in love with these bowls that fit the bill, so I snagged them.

14275036_00_d

They are made from recycled melamine and are very similar to the old ones.  The other thing I'm pretty sure I'll be doing when I get home is baking so I really did need these.......after all, girl's been deprived of a real oven for 2 1/2 years.  Where's the muffin mix already!?!?!

Rockin' Ring and Links...

IMGP0931

I've been hitting the metal hard the past few months making projects for my new book, but I've not shown you kids a thing.  I like to keep them in my (and my editor's) pocket so it's a big surprise when the book comes out.  But, yesterday, I had to take a moment and stop to play.  It all started when I had to cut up this necklace...

Stuff 303

I wasn't ready to, but it had to be done.  You know, for the love of the craft.  I cut up a lot of stuff because it's not easy to get on the horn and have some beads sent over here....NOW.  Anywho, I was looking at these beads and one had a pretty big hole---(I think they are from Riverstone Bead company btw).  I stuck a piece of copper tubing in the hole and riveted it.  I love to rivet!  Then I had this ring shank that I'd made awhile back for my felt ball rings (show you those wacky things another time).  Stuck the rock on that thing and riveted in place.  Voila.  Rockin' Ring....and a weapon perhaps.

IMGP0933

Speaking of rockin' rings, check out Carmi's big ring she just made.  Carmi, you should totally send this idea into Photojojo. I think they would like it a lot!  ;-)

Fan-atic for Fabric...

Stuff 291

It's that time again....thinking about what clothes to take home in July.  That sounds obsessive, but the thing is our washer only has one water line running to it and that's hard cold water.  We have no dryer so we hang dry everything (this is all normal here because of the energy it takes to heat water and run a dryer for 1.3 bil people) so you can imagine how "great" our clothes look after six months all crunchy and gray.  This is a con to apartment living in Ch!na, but the upside is you can buy fabric and have clothes tailor made for a pretty low cost.

Stuff 275

I'm working again for Plaid at the Craft and Hobby Association convention doing the jewelry make and take.  Yay!!  I always wear Asian style clothing because I love the styles and cuts...or should I say silhouette like they do on Project Runway.  This snazzy red and white fabric number will be transformed into something kimono-esque.  I've got a whole stack of fabric to take to the tailor.  It's sort of nerve racking because there is no guarantee that the fabric you love will look good in what you want to have made---this is something I take for granted when shopping for clothing back home.  Thank you fashion designers!  Boy, I've had some doozies over the last few years where the clothes just don't look right.  The agony and excitement of scissors and beautiful fabric, I tell ya.

Stuff 285

And then of course you need some jewelry to match.  The fan necklace is one of the pieces I made to wear at the show in February featuring Plaid's new Connect line--glass links and beads in fabulous colors.  You can pick your own links up at Michaels.  I glued the silver fan to the square link and added a string of seed beads to tie it on at the top with nylon cord.  The clasp is from Beadalon. I wear this piece all the time and get tons of compliments and it was SO EASY to make!  Somehow that makes the compliments sweeter. Maybe I'll take a picture of all my fabric and show you some before and after shots.... that could be fun.

Open...Sesame.

Stuff 207

Yesterday, I was inspired by this little number I put on the dress form.  Is it nerdy that I put stuff on a form to see how it looks together or just to look at?  Love that ruffley net shirt I got for 5.99 on the clearance rack.  The necklace I bought up in pearl town in Suzhou for $3---pleasantly simple with romantic textures and colors.  BUT!  I've had it for 2 years and forgot to wear it!  Oh, brother!!  Sadly, today it has to take one for the team because I need more pearl beaded beads so I'll disassemble it.  Bummer, but what's a girl gonna do?  Take a picture and try to replace it later.....

Stuff 210

Ornamentea has some beautiful ribbon in lots of colors---it's called organza (I think.)  Fire Mt.Gems has the pearl beaded beads last I checked.  So, I guess it's safe to start chopping it to pieces.  :-(  I don't know why I'm feeling bad.  I did not wear it once.

Stuff 240

Squeezed in a yummy lunch yesterday---yes, that's my kitchen table right now covered in beads and pliers.  I'm working on my book projects in all corners of the apartment at the moment. The lunch was super good and easy to make.  It's peanut sesame noodles from this website.  Just spicy enough with lots of flavor....Mmmmm.  This website has some nice and authentic recipes if you like Ch!nese cooking.  Today I'm making braised tofu.  Tofu:  my new best friend.

Tutti, Fruitti, and Rutie

DSCF0721

Here's a little fetish of mine.... Nut Bugs!  Have you ever seen them?  They are so cute with their wiggly legs.  I got my first one as a kid when my grandma had them in her store.  These are from Suzhou and I was thrilled to snatch them up.

DSCF0718

I've found more than a bug or two in my fruits and veg here because the produce is picked and put on the shelves, mud and all.  The other day I was cleaning some celery and there was a little red-worm taking a snooze down in the valley of the stalk.  Then there was the time I got a gnat infested head of broccoli and didn't realize it until I saw around 30 gnats floating on the surface of my beautiful soup.  I can laugh about that one now, but at the time....well, you can imagine.

Really enjoyed this post over at Claire's blog today---I just pretend I can read French, picking out words that sort of look familiar.  The button and twirly wire brooch is magical.

Links and Toffee...

IMGP0864

The other day, my friend made a "something, something pie."  Well, that's the way I understood it---she's from London and sometimes (when I haven't had enough coffee), I cannot understand a word she says.  She said the name of the pie about four times before I thought to look at the recipe.  "Ohhhhhhhhh, Banoffee pie," I said.  "Why, what'd you think I said."  "I have no idea, but I'm looking forward to it."  We've had so many of these moments where I'm in the dark and then realization comes and we bust out laughing.  Apparently this is more of an English dessert and her recipe was from the Nestle UK website.  After tasting it, it all made sense; Banana + Toffee, naturally equals "Banoffee".  And boy, was it was lovely! Especially with those ginormous chocolate twirls she thought to put on top.

Tree-mendous Jewelry Holder...

DSCF0767

You can probably imagine how many pieces of jewelry I own.  It's a lot.  You too?  It oozes out of boxes and drawers, I tell ya.  This is one of my storage solution pieces I keep on my night stand.

DSCF0769

It's an ever-growing tree that blossoms rings, necklaces, bangles and more.  Confession: I have 3.  One is out in the living room with ornaments and things, the other one I inherited from my pal that moved and it holds my BIG rings collection.  You can pick these dandy things up at Ikea for around $5 dollars I think.

DSCF0775

This tree has a potpourri of pieces on it...  I've been collecting jewelry ever since I was in middle school, digging through my grandma's attic and my mom's old stuff.  Then there are a few pieces from my older sister from the 80s.  Yesssss.  But, what I wouldn't do for a slinky bracelet!  Remember those?  They weren't very durable, but they looked cool.  There are also necklaces made by my friends on here.  Anyway, it's another way to have keepsakes out, surrounding yourself with memories of those favorite people and times----which I love.....

Doin' the Mango Shuffle...

into the pot

I've been curious about mango chutney ever since I tried some at the Indian restaurant.  Mangos are IN season here, so yesterday afternoon, my friends and I gave this recipe a go.

choppers

After a lot of measuring, we got the pot going and discovered we were 7 cups shy on mangos---took 16 cups total!!  So I scurried down to the store and bought 10 more pounds and ended up adding all of them except 2.  2!  I wish you could have seen them all. This is our friendly, emergency mango chopping assembly line.  The recipe makes 240 servings by the way, but I think it was even more after we made it.

simmering

Everything simmering away here...bubbling in all it's glory.  I learned a lot yesterday, but the most valuable lesson is this:  It's not a good idea to stand over a pot stirring constantly with 5 chilies in it, taking the vapors in all the while.  911!  My nose was on fire.  My face was on fire.  Not to mention, I got chili oil under my thumb nail from chopping.  Though they are so small and cute and I love the color of them, chilies can be kind of vicious.  But, I'm pretty sure breathing in those spicy vapors warded off that sinus infection that's been lurking.

jars

Now don't these jars look perfect and tidy, like we made just the right quantity to fill each one.  Ha! Yeah right! We had chutney coming out our ears!  Totally unprepared for this, we scrambled to find more jars and tubs---not a drop went to waste.  Does anyone want some?  I've got a load of it in the fridge and it is Yummy!

Bead Market: Take 78

IMGP0813

Sorry for the MIA the past couple of days.  I think I had some sort of pinched nerve in my shoulder, but the pain was really in my arm and wrist.  It was weird and I didn't feel like using the computer too much. I'm happy to say it's mostly gone today.  Tuesday I and a few other ladies took a road trip to the bead market.  I shop at this store frequently and these are two of my pals that help me dig through the bags, looking for the most perfect beads.  I had to laugh when I saw how I looked sitting on that stool, knees up to my ears.  The girls insisted this was much better than sitting on the floor---so nice!  I never wore crocs until I moved to Ch!na---they are the best shoe to wear here with the damp floors and dusty side walks, just in case you are coming this way.

IMGP0830

Here's my loot from the day.  I think I did ok.  I guess I was gravitating towards naturals and blues and greens.  They've come out with some new cloisonne beads that are really luminous.  I hope someone State-side will carry them.  Lots of dyed stone and saw some crazy Swarovski-look-a-likes.  Crazy!  Don't you love laying all your stuff out after a big shopping trip?  Inevitably, I have a few pieces that I don't remember buying, because after three hours in that place, I've got more than a few loose beads rolling around in my brain.  Whadaya-gonna-do.

IMGP0828

I also found these little treats to take home to all the girls in my family.  Faux cinnabar bangle bracelets! Mmmmm.

Plants

It has been raining here all day.  We've definitely enjoyed ourselves up here in the nest.  Rocker is curled up in his blanket snoozing the day away.  I made the invitation for my class's big 10 year reunion, watched a movie and now I'm thinking about reading.  Earlier, I looked up grilled sandwiches on All-Recipes and found this idea...

DSCF0618

Grilled Apple and Swiss Cheese Sandwich.  Botch started slicing apples and I olive oiled up the bread.  I have to say every time I see Butch slicing apples it brings back memories of baking apple dumplings at Grandma's.  He and my grandpa standing side by side at the kitchen sink peeling and slicing, solving the world's troubles getting, wiser by the slice.  Um, where were we?  Ah, the sandwich.  It was gooooood.  We fixed some soup to go with it.  Definitely hit the spot on this rainy Saturday.

1-2-3 Craft!

I was sifting through a bowl of random bits in my office the other day and came across this fish charm I made awhile back.  It was a quick experiment and an attempt not to let a drop of mixed Envirotex Lite go to waste.  This is a fun and simple project you can make with your kids this summer. Here's what you need:

Stuff 009

Grab some Mother of Pearl shell beads/tags from Fire Mt. Gems and Beads.

stickers

Find some extra cute little stickers and stick em' to the shells.  I got mine here, but the package says made in Korea and Japan-land of all things extra cute and sweet.  Check around Ebay for stores like this to get your own.  You could also use metallic paint pens to decorate the shell backgrounds first.  Wouldn't that be fun!?!?!

finished necklace

Seal the sticker in with either Envirotex Lite or Diamond Glaze.  Envirotex is my favorite beacuse it makes for a really hard extra slick surface, but Diamond Glaze dries A LOT faster and more kiddie friendly probably.  Either way, some may fill in the hole on the shell and you may have to use a dremel tool and drill bit to open it again.  Add a jump ring and ball chain and voila; cuteness hanging from your neck!  But, why stop there?  Add some more beaded dangles and silver charms perhaps?  Less is More?  More is less?  Who cares, it's fun!

Beading Daily.Com had a post yesterday that listed a load of beading ideas for kids.  Tis the season for filling those long summer days with beads and day dreaming out around the picnic table in the back yard.

Navajo Fry Bread...

380416-R1-15-10 (Small)

I'm going to rewind back seven years to our trip to the Grand Canyon because that's when it all started.....  We were staying on the south side and drove around to the North rim.  Somewhere in the middle we decided to take what looked like a short-cut on the map through the Navajo reservation out around Tuba City.  That's where we met Lee.

Lee (Small)

Lee was sitting in front of his house selling grapes and chatting with a friend.  We stopped, got some grapes, started talking and ended up getting a tour of the area.  We saw all the traditional housing, sweat lodges, dutch ovens, outdoor sleeping, and the sheep.  I loved the sheep.  Lee's mom was an artist, but all her weavings were locked up because she was out of town at a wedding.  Lee explaining this was hilarious.  We are always so lucky meeting the coolest people on our trips.  Later he told us about some petroglyphs up the road which sounded interesting.  So we three hopped in the car and headed out to see those.  They were in the middle of no where!  We ended up off roding (sorry rental car company) across some sand, up to some rocks and on the back side, there they were.  Crazy.  We left Lee and continued on, stopped for some lunch and that's when I had Navajo fry bread for the first time---a fluffy, not particularly low-fat (seize the day, already!), deep fried bread.

Fry bread

Two times, I ate it on that trip.  Dipped in honey, it was love at first bite.  I've thought about it off and on for the last five years and then it dawned on me to Google a recipe for it.  Duh.  I've since learned that fry bread is a magical concoction of milk, flour and baking powder, rolled out and deep fried.  Seemed simple enough.  A month ago I attempted to make it, but it came out hard as biscuits.  Edible, but not so enjoyable.  I later learned I had over worked the dough, thanks to some comments and this YouTube video.  Does it excite anyone else all the indie cooking shows on YouTube?  When I tried again on Sunday at my friend's house, I messed up yet another batch of dough---too dry.  So we, re-watched the video, did a huddle, broke and as they say, third time's a charm.  We did it!  And it took ALL of us!  Lord, it was funny.

380418-R1-09-16 (Small)

Like flipping through a photo album, eating this bread brings back many memories of that happy trip.

Here's a link to the history of fry bread and some recipes.

New Tunes...

I'm hooked on the music from the movie Dan in Real Life---most of the music is by Sondre Lerche.  Mellow, accoustic, nice beat, up-beat, I like it...

Soup Sunday and Links...

Soup

Yesterday, we went to our friends house to cook---a fun Sunday lunch get together.  We made Cambodian Chicken Soup and Navajo Fry Bread.  More on the fry bread tomorrow.  We liked the soup----it was light so it's good for summer.  Always looking for new soups to try and this was a fun one because it had so many ingredients.  *It says to add the rice to the soup, but we served the soup over the rice which I liked better.

Stuff 147

For dessert, my friend baked me a birthday raspberry cream pie that was oozing with whipped cream and tartness.  Am I lucky or what?!?! It was DEEEEEEEEEE-Viiiiiiine!  I can't say as I've ever had raspberry cream pie, which now seems like a crime.  Two left over pieces await us in the fridge for a late afternoon treat with some coffee.  Lovely on this rainy day!  And now for some links from the bead bloggers...

Yesterday, I whipped up my friend Krissy's breakfast casserole recipe to celebrate the weekend's arrival.   It's drizzly outside.  Nothing says lovin'like a hot sizzly casserole and the smell of coffee wafting through the air on a rainy morning.  I'm still working today and Botch heads out to the factory in a few minutes, but it's the thought that counts.  Secretly (but not anymore), I'd like to curl up with this book I've been slow to finish.  Bastard Out of Carolina.  Have you read it?  There's a movie too, but I've not seen it.  So far, so sad, but it's a must-read for me, so I will push on.  I think I'm almost half way through it.

Hey, want to make your own casserole?  The weekend's not over yet!

Krissy's Easter Morning Casserole, as she calls it. All though, she first made it for us at our 7AM Super Bowl party.  The girls ate it with fruit and Mimosas and the guys ate it with taco dip and beer.  Silly boys.

  • 8 slices of white bread, crusted and cubed
  • 1/2 lb grated sharp cheddar
  • 6 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 t. dry mustard
  • 1 t. salt
  • 2 C. milk
  • 1 1/2 lb. link sausage, browned and sliced
  • 7 x 11 casserole dish, greased

Layer dish with bread and sausage.  Mix the eggs, milk, salt, and mustard together and pour over bread and sausage.  Set in fridge over night.  Cover top with cheese and bake 1 hr. at 325-350 degrees.  I confess, I bake it as is and then put a tad of cheese on top (imported cheese is $ 6-7 dollars a bag here in Ch!na.  Ouch!)

Hope you're all having a great weekend.  It's time for me to get back to my little work room.  :-)

Earthquake Relief...

Horrifying stories about the earthquake in our neighboring province, Sichuan, were rolling in and we wanted to do something....  So, about a week after it happened, we were sitting at our friend Chuk's restaurant and I turned to him and said, "Chuk, have you heard of anything going down with fund raising for the earthquake relief?"  He says, "Oh, yeah, Loads!"  I told him about an idea and he said, "there's Kate (sitting at the next table) she's organizing some stuff at the international school."

So, I hopped up, talked to Kate, explained my idea, she said when and here I am....repairing jewelry and stringing beads for donations to the relief efforts.  Don't you love it when things fall into place like that?  It really was meant to be.

I emailed all my pals and explained the scoop.  Kate put up signs, friends told friends.  I wasn't sure what to expect, but I fixed around 25 pieces of jewelry---most repairs were easy like a loose jump ring, a charm that fell off or a broken clasp.  Each piece of jewelry had a story to tell---who gave it to them, how it got broke, where they bought it, why it was meaningful.  It was neat to hear all the stories.  Some people came by just to visit and chat.  Made some new friends too!

Then................the school bell rang.  School was out.  Beads were IN!  I brought a big bowl of beads and elastic in case some folks wanted a little craft therapy.  Man, we strung some beads.  Moms, Dads, brothers, sisters, teachers, dogs (ok, not dogs) all stringing beads for good!

It was a blast!  After a few hours, there was 1400 RMB stuffed in my little donation jar!  The power of creativity and craft continues to inspire me.  Thank you to everyone for your support.  Thank you to QSI for letting me hang in the lobby and fix jewelry.  My heart goes out to all the victims-people and animals-of these disasters.  Hugs to you all.

Ornament Thursday...Insectica

Happy Ornament Thursday!  This month’s Ornament Thursday theme is Insectica.  The next word that comes to mind is “bug.”  Bug.  Cute as a bug.  Bugs Bunny.  Bug, in a rug.  Bed Bugs.  It’s buggy out.  Snug as a bug.  Bug bite.  Don’t bug me.   Bug off. Love bug. Did I miss any?  Leave a comment if you think of one.

Stuff 072 (Small)

Once upon a time, I was a bug.  It was my nickname when I was little…thanks to my dad.  My older sister was Daisy Duke, just in case you were wondering (she was hooked on the Dukes of Hazard). When I think about it, I’ve had quite a lot of encounters with insects and bugs.  It started in 3rd grade when I talked Grandpa into buying me a toy at K-Mart that was basically a small playground for bugs in a clear plastic dome…..dare I say Flea Circus.  99% positive I tried being a farmer of an ant farm.  I still miss the lightning bugs every summer.  One of my favorite memories was roller-blading through our river walk back home on a hot summer night with all the lighting bugs twinkling around us.  Very magical.  In college I took Entomology 309, a fabulously fun class with Chris Oseto (one of the best teachers on the planet).   This led to casting bees and beetles in bronze and silver in our spare time over at the metals studio.  Why?  Because we could.  (Note:  the beetles were long gone before we got to them---no beetles were hurt in the process)  I can remember three different bug boxes of mine.  Do kids collect bugs anymore?  I’m feeling a little dusty.  Poor bugs.

This month’s buggy ornament offering comes from the Candie and Jean (aka my mom) archives again.  My mom did the crazy painting of the bugs like this….

bugs

then I added texture and details with colored pencil, some sterling antennae and a little tie tack pin back like this…..

Voila!  Cute as a bug…..on your collar!
